In traditional sumi-e, the chrysanthemum (kiku) is highly revered. It is one of the "Four Gentlemen" (along with the plum blossom, orchid, and bamboo) and traditionally represents autumn, elegance, and resilience, as it blooms bravely even as the frost approaches.
