Hokusai had a strong interest in painting Daruma, also known as Bodhidharma. Daruma was a revered Buddhist monk from the 5th or 6th century who is considered the patriarch and founder of Zen Buddhism. He painted colossal portraits of the Buddhist monk Daruma using buckets of ink and broom-sized brushes before amazed crowds in 1804 and 1817
