Ghost (Study of a Yūrei)

Inspired by Hokusai

Hokusai was fascinated by the supernatural and folklore, and his depictions of ghosts are some of the most iconic in Japanese art history. Towards the end of his life (the 1840s), Hokusai painted a haunting, original brush painting simply titled Ghost (Yūrei). Unlike the bold, colorful woodblock prints, this painting relies entirely on brushwork, this ghost was a pale, floating female figure with no lower body.
