When seen by two,
Even the flowers
Are twice as bright
Kobayashi Issa
A dear friend of mine asked for me to do a painting as her wedding present and it look me ages to decide what it should be and then I settled on the ‘Double Happiness’, which combine joy and happiness. It is a well-known Chinese character, but the Japanese version looks very different.
Here I tried to vary ink from deep, soulful blacks to the 'flying white' of a dry brush, symbolising the highs and lows of a shared journey. The classic take on this one is in KOKU-ON (黒音 - Black Sound) Section.
